Daytime Nighttime installation overview

Time translated into ceramic rhythm.

Daytime / Nighttime is a visual translation of time. The work consists of ±365 ceramic rings, each representing one day of the year. The colour of each ring is based on the balance between daylight and night-time on that specific day.

Light tones refer to long summer days; darker tones mark the longer nights of winter. Together, the rings form a soft calendar: systematic in structure, but sensory in experience.

The work is connected to data visualisation, but refuses the coldness of a purely graphic diagram. Through clay, repetition and handwork, the data becomes slow, tactile and bodily.

Interpretation

The work makes time visible as an accumulation of minimal differences. Day by day, the shift is almost imperceptible; across the installation, everything changes. In that slowness, time becomes something spatial, tactile and quietly present.
